Are you getting better every single day? Is your horse getting better? If you're not, then let's start at the beginning: with your goal. With your VERY specific target of what you want to achieve with your horse, whether that's connection, trust, respect, or finesse. Break it down. Write it out. Be clear. Be specific. Don't just say, "I want to ride my horse three times a week." Say, "I will ride my horse Monday, Wednesday, and Friday morning, doing three liberty-based groundwork exercises to address my horse's trouble spot of X before getting on. And then, once I am on, I will focus on softening my horse through their head, neck, and body using circle exercises before practicing proper body control in our lope transitions during our main ride. The Monday ride will be with my coach who can help guide my training. I will use their feedback to practice key weaknesses during the remainder of our rides each week and use my coach to hold me accountable on our work." If you want to achieve big results, this is what you need to do. Produce little wins - consistent wins - that will lead up to the big wins, of connection, of trust, of respect, of finesse. For the biters ⬇️ Here's one of my top exercises that we use for biters, mouthy colts or studs, or horses that are unaware/disrespectful of your space. *First things first, make sure it's their biting isn't a physical reaction to pain, pinching tack, ulcers, etc. This exercise focuses on pivoting our horse's front end away from us. Why? Because horse's naturally communicate by moving each other's feet. Leadership and respect is expressed in this way, and that's why this exercise is so effective. We teach our horse to move their feet with intention, displaying a form of leadership that they naturally understand. And when they see you as a leader, they're less likely to challenge or disrespect you by biting. So what do we do? We use our body to pivot our horse AWAY from us. Release when your horse crosses over in the front (they should be pivoting on their outside hind foot, not just be walking in a circle). You want to see them pick up their outside shoulder and cross over. Why is this important? When we move their feet with purpose, we’re not just creating motion; we’re developing respect, body control, awareness of our space, and engagement. This helps build a relationship based on mutual understanding—much like what happens in a herd dynamic. This is an important one ⬇️ Everyone, I'd like you to meet Spencer. He is a quarter horse who was brought to me to get started under saddle a few years ago. After his initial start, he completed an additional year of reining work with another trainer. Then, for the past three months, he came back to me for liberty work and connection refinement. But this boy, despite having him as a colt, stumped me for awhile. Under saddle, he know all the maneuvers. He could perform them at a high level and did everything perfectly. BUT the moment I went to work with him at liberty, any form of connection or responsiveness was lost. I couldn't even get him to move forward, let alone do a performance worthy spin, despite him knowing all the moves fluently. With reins or ropes, he would work FOR me, but once I removed that, I found out he didn't want to work WITH me. There's a big difference between the two, and this boy really made me realize that again. Slowly, day by day, I began showing him that the option to perform was his. That working could be fun, enjoyable, engaging, and stimulating. That he wasn't here 'for' me, but to be 'with' me. And over the past three months, he has completely opened up into being a different horse. Now, everything that he knew under saddle, can also be done without ropes, without reins, without bridles, and by his choice. He's performing because he trusts me, respects me, and has found mutual partnership, not because we've simply told him to. Now, this post isn't to knock on anyone's training or training style, but it is to highlight how liberty work can show holes in the most intricate parts of your foundation. Where, even with a finished show horse, there can be such an importance to stripping away your tools and discovering if your partnership is built on 'working for' or 'working with.' Steal our groundwork checklist 👇 Can your horse... ✅ Soften the poll, neck, and head in all directions using light rein/rope pressure; ✅ Have an established connection at liberty, where the horse is actively engaged, trusting, confident, and relaxed; ✅ Have independent control of all body parts (moving their hips, ribs, and shoulders) ✅ Can move at all three gaits on the ground with soft transitions, not rushing, and without being sluggish. ✅ Are desensitized. To us being around and above them, to obstacles on the ground, to things on their back. And to answer the question -- we don't have a set amount of time before we get on a horse for the first time.
