Can you guess this animal? This is a drawing of a modern animal if you drew it the way many early science illustrators drew dinosaurs. They just drew skin wrapped around bone without muscle, turning this normal animal into a monster. This is called “shrink wrapping” and it has affected the way a lot of us think about what dinosaurs looked like… If you want to know more about dinosaurs, watch our longer video! Dinosaurs lived for WAY longer than most people think... My favorite fact about this is: There was more time that separates Stegosaurus from T-Rex than separates T-Rex from us! What are the deepest things humans have ever built inside the Earth? Plus, we emailed the scientists responsible for the world's deepest hole ever, and here's what they said… Overall, this hole was only .2% of the way to the center of the Earth! How big were dinosaurs really? Imagine you lined a bunch of them up by size… You’d see the tiny Anchiornis, the Compsognathus here, the famous velociraptor (smaller than I thought!), the Nyasasaurus, the Pachyrhinosaurus, the Triceratops, the Stegosaurus, the T-Rex! One of the largest known dinosaurs, the Argentinosaurus, was about as long and heavier than a commercial airplane... We made a longer video all about dinosaurs! This is the actual size of the brain of a dinosaur the size of an elephant! After discovering a skull of a Pachyrhinosaurus, scientists put it through a scanner, which helped them to reconstruct what brain would have fit inside. Here's what they learned... Where did the asteroid that wiped out the dinosaurs* actually land? Let me show you... This is the impact site of a giant space rock wider than Mount Everest is tall from 66 million years ago. But for a long time, we didn’t know it was there... We made a whole video about the cutting edge of dinosaur research, check it out! Follow for optimistic science and tech stories. *Only the big ones! Birds are dinosaurs! #animation #dinosaur #asteroid #stem
This tiny new brain is a huge deal. Scientists mapped an entire fruit fly brain. It’s the size of a poppy seed. Our human brains are about the size of a cantaloupe. This map is different from other brain images you’ve seen because it shows all of the almost 140,000 neurons linked by over 50 million synapses. It took slicing the brain into 7,000 layers, imaging it 21 million times, and having hundreds of volunteers help piece it together to create. If we tried to do this to a human brain, it would take billions of dollars and hundreds of years! That’s not feasible right now, but this fly brain can tell us a lot already... SpaceX did it AGAIN, they caught their rocket booster! But it didn’t all go exactly as planned. Here’s what happened with the recent Flight 7… Catching this booster again is a HUGE deal. When a rocket is launched and reaches the boundaries of space, it breaks apart. The spaceship portion goes off into space, and the rocket booster portion comes back to earth. Traditionally NASA has their rocket boosters fall into the ocean - but that means costly recovery. But SpaceX has now for the second time directed that booster back to ground and caught it! Which is just SO COOL. And matters for making space flight more sustainable and cheaper. But the spaceship portion ran into trouble: It appears they had an oxygen and fuel leak, and “disassembled” in the atmosphere. All in, it’s a big moment that shows both the challenges of space and a leap toward making space more accessible. How EXACTLY did the dinosaurs* go extinct? I know a rock hit Earth… but then what? Here’s what happened on the day that a rock wider than Mount Everest hit 66.04 million years ago… If you want to know more about how scientists discover dinosaurs and reveal what happened to them, watch our longer video! Why can’t I vote online? I bank online! Over the past two months, I called up a bunch of voting and security experts to try answer that question. And the answer is more controversial, complicated, and high stakes than I could have ever imagined. Here are a few of the reasons why - and we made a whole longer video about it, out now! There is a future where we could vote online. But in the meantime, it’s worth remembering just how awesome it is to vote in the first place. A lot of people fought for my right to do that and I’m deeply grateful. So if you feel that way, if you can, GO VOTE. #LearnOnTikTok #tech
Is there life on this moon? NASA wants to find out… NASA just launched a mission to look for alien life on Europa, one of Jupiter’s moons. The reason scientists think it might have life starts with the fact that deep beneath its icy surface evidence suggests there might be a huge saltwater ocean, with about twice as much water as all of earth’s oceans combined.... And if we do find signs of life, the question becomes: WHAT NEXT? I’m making a longer video, so subscribe for optimistic science and tech stories! #animation #europa #jupiter #space #NASA #alien
What would happen if I tried to fly a plane above another planet? On Mercury, Mars, Venus, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune... would it fly more easily? Would it come crashing down? Would it be shredded to bits? We’re very very lucky to live on this particular planet! Thank you to Randall Munroe's XKCD for this idea! We're big fans. The North and South poles sometimes swap places… You might know that the churning metal soup inside Earth’s outer core generates electrical currents, which in turn creates the magnetic field around the Earth - which is the reason you’re not getting fried by cosmic radiation right now. But what you might not know (ok, I didn't know until recently), is that every so often, that magnetic field actually REVERSES. But the coolest part is how we know that... Some scientists are trying to figure out how to predict the movement of the magnetic field, but thankfully, it protects us on the surface either way! We made a longer episode about the deep earth and you won’t believe what we find... #animation #deepearth #science #tech
NASA’s Parker Solar Probe just broke the record for the closest we’ve EVER been to our sun. And because of the sun’s gravity, it’s also become the fastest man-made object ever. Google just announced a crazy new quantum computing chip. It can solve a problem in 5 minutes that would take one of the fastest supercomputers 10 septillion years! BUT that problem was a “benchmark” problem called RCS, chosen specifically because it’s extremely hard for a supercomputer - which are still better at basically everything practical. The real reason you should care about quantum computers and this new chip is less about beating supercomputers at things they’re already great at and more about doing new things - like really accurate simulations of nature at a quantum level that could be used for drug discovery or battery development or more. This new chip matters for how we might get there. Here’s why… If you want to know more about the real future of quantum computing, Marques and I made a longer video! If humans have only ever been 12 kilometers down... how do we know what's inside? Well, scientists used to have some interesting ideas about this! But now, one big answer is: Earthquakes. What can astronauts eat in space? Well, sometimes pizza. And chocolate cake! But also... liquid salt? Most of the food on the International Space Station is either heat processed and ready to eat Or freeze-dried and just needs water. The lack of gravity makes assembling and eating food a bit harder… It also means there’s certain foods they simply can’t bring! Any loose crumbs could float into equipment and damage it, so salt and pepper come in liquid form, and to avoid bread crumbs, they eat a lot of tortillas! Zero gravity also makes food behave weirdly... As more people go to space, and for longer, we’ll need to find ways to effectively grow enough food with limited resources.
