I know how hard this video will be for you all to see, but it is the reality. I try to share the good, but it is also so important for people to see the bad. Virgil is fighting for his life. It’s not pretty, and there’s not much I can do. So I sit with him. Let him feel a loving touch. Let him not be alone in these hard times. It’s heartbreaking. But it is also an incredibly moving example of why we do what we do. This horse is so sweet, and you don’t get to his age in this world unless he spent those years serving people. And this is how the world treated him. He was ridden in his kill pen video and it’s hard for me stomach that fact now with his head in my lap. He has new shoes on all of his hooves, which means he was in work up until they sent him to auction. It makes me so irate and so sad at the same time. There are so many horses out there that need us. How do we help more? How do people see this and look away? How do we help more when funding the ones we have is already an impossible task? I don’t have the answers. So I sit here, cradling his head and whispering to him about the life he’ll have if he just keeps fighting.
